East Zion's backcountry — the stretch of Bureau of Land Management and private land bordering Zion National Park's eastern edge — holds a genuinely different kind of scenery and history from the park itself, reachable only by off-road vehicle across routes a standard rental car can't handle. This expedition's real stops trace both deep geologic time and more recent human history across that terrain, with a licensed guide to put each one in context.
The Dinosaur Tracks stop is grounded in real science: rock layers across the broader Zion region, particularly the Moenave and Kayenta Formations, preserve genuine Early Jurassic dinosaur footprints left roughly 200 million years ago in muddy lakeshore and river sediment and since fossilized. Three-toed tracks from large bipedal dinosaurs (classified under the ichnogenus Eubrontes) and smaller relatives (Grallator) are among the most commonly documented track types found across this part of Utah.
The Schunesburg Mail Drop stop ties to a real settlement named Shunesburg, founded in the early 1860s along the Virgin River by Mormon pioneers who purchased the land from a Southern Paiute chief named Shunes — the community's namesake. Warriors Walk follows a real trail with a long history of Native American use across this landscape; your guide can speak to its significance in more depth than a short description allows.
The route's overlook takes in Rockville, a real pioneer-era community founded by Mormon settlers in 1862 along the Virgin River — a small town that's still inhabited today, not an abandoned site, though the genuinely abandoned 1859 settlement of Grafton sits just across the river and is among the best-known ghost towns in southern Utah.
