Half Dome is probably the single most recognizable silhouette in Yosemite Valley, and the popular explanation for its shape — that a glacier sliced clean through a once-whole dome and carried the other half away — turns out to be a myth. Geologists have confirmed that no glacier ever reached high enough to touch Half Dome's summit at all. What actually happened is slower and far less dramatic: water seeped into existing cracks in the granite, froze and expanded through countless winters, and peeled away sheet after sheet of rock in a process called exfoliation, until roughly 20 percent of the original dome had fallen away. "Half Dome" is, in other words, something of a misnomer — about 80 percent of the original rock is still standing today.
At roughly 8,800 feet above sea level and about 4,737 feet above the valley floor, Half Dome dominates the eastern end of Yosemite Valley from almost every angle, including from Curry Village, where this tour meets.
Curry Village is itself a real piece of the valley's history, down to its name. For a few years starting in 2016, a trademark dispute between the National Park Service and the park's former concessionaire forced it to operate under the name "Half Dome Village" instead, along with several other renamed Yosemite landmarks; the dispute was settled in 2019, and the historic Curry Village name was restored. It remains one of the valley's main gathering points, within easy reach of the Merced River, Half Dome's base, and the trailheads leading up toward Vernal and Nevada Falls.
Because this is a genuinely private experience built around a single group with lunch included, the pace is set by you rather than a bus schedule — real value on a day when summer crowds and shuttle lines can otherwise eat into however many hours you actually have in the valley.
