Mariposa Grove is Yosemite's own real stand of giant sequoias — a completely separate landmark from the General Sherman Tree and the rest of Sequoia National Park further south, which this tour does not visit. Mariposa Grove and Yosemite Valley were, in fact, the two parcels President Abraham Lincoln set aside together on June 30, 1864, under the Yosemite Grant — the first time the U.S. federal government ever acted to protect scenic wilderness for public use, a full 26 years before Yosemite itself became a national park in 1890.
The grove is home to roughly 500 mature giant sequoias, including the Grizzly Giant — one of the largest in the grove and, at an estimated 1,800-plus years old, one of its oldest trees — and the living California Tunnel Tree, carved through in 1895 and still standing today (pedestrians walk through it now; cars no longer do). The grove closed for three years for a major, roughly $40 million restoration — removing an old road and tram system, adding boardwalks and a shuttle, and letting Rattlesnake Creek's natural flow return — before reopening to the public in June 2018.
From Mariposa Grove, this real full-day tour continues to Glacier Point, Tunnel View, Bridalveil Fall, and Valley View — the Valley's own most iconic overlooks, each giving a different real angle on El Capitan, Half Dome, and the Valley floor below. San Francisco sits roughly 190 to 210 miles from the park depending on route, commonly cited at about 3.5 to 4.5 hours each way, which is why the 14-to-15-hour duration genuinely reflects both directions of driving plus a full day of real sightseeing rather than an inflated estimate.
