Sequoia National Park is a genuinely separate national park from Yosemite — established September 25, 1890, making it the second national park created in the United States, after Yellowstone in 1872. Its giant sequoias are not Yosemite's Mariposa Grove trees; Sequoia's most famous tree, the General Sherman Tree in the Giant Forest, stands about 275 feet tall and is estimated at more than 2,000 years old, and by trunk volume it's recognized as the largest known living single-stem tree on Earth.
There's no direct road across the Sierra Nevada crest connecting the two parks, so a real two-park trip has to drop down into the San Joaquin Valley and back up — roughly 215 miles between Sequoia and Yosemite, with Fresno sitting near the midpoint at about 3 hours from each. From Los Angeles, Sequoia is genuinely the closer of the two parks, at roughly 200 miles and 4 to 5 hours by road, which is why a 2-day loop visiting Sequoia first and continuing on to Yosemite is a logistically coherent way to see both rather than two separate round trips.
