El Capitan's sheer granite face rises roughly 3,000 feet straight up from the Valley floor — one of the largest exposed granite monoliths on Earth — with its real summit sitting at about 7,569 feet above sea level. Half Dome climbs even higher: its distinctive sheared-off dome reaches roughly 8,800 feet above sea level, towering nearly 4,700 feet above the Valley floor beneath it. Both are the same pale Sierra Nevada granite, but they catch light completely differently depending on the hour — exactly the kind of real, hands-on lighting problem a full-day photography workshop is built to work through, rather than the single quick exposure a brief stop allows.
A genuine full day gives real room to chase the light rather than settle for whatever's available on a single pass-through: flatter morning light across the Valley floor, the harder overhead light of midday that tests exposure and contrast skills, and the warm alpenglow that can turn El Capitan's granite gold or pink in the hour before sunset. Tunnel View and Bridalveil Fall are among the Valley's most consistently photographed real vantage points, each offering a different relationship between light, water, and granite depending on when you're there — the kind of variation this format is designed to let you work through, not just glimpse once.
This is a private workshop for your group only, with a dedicated instructor working at your pace throughout the full 8 hours. Meeting happens directly in Yosemite Valley rather than from a distant departure city, so the day is spent entirely on real photography instruction rather than driving time.
