Ansel Adams first visited Yosemite in 1916 at age fourteen, shooting his earliest photographs on a Kodak Brownie box camera his father had given him for the trip. He returned to the park almost every year for the rest of his life, and by 1919 he was working as a custodian at the Sierra Club's LeConte Memorial Lodge in the Valley. His 1927 portfolio Parmelian Prints of the High Sierras, anchored by the image Monolith: The Face of Half Dome, launched his career and helped cement Yosemite's lasting reputation as one of the most photographed landscapes in the world — a reputation this private lesson draws on directly, with real instruction tailored to beginner or advanced skill levels.
Rather than working the crowded Valley floor, this lesson heads up into Yosemite's genuine high country along the Tioga Pass corridor, to Olmsted Point and Tenaya Lake. Olmsted Point looks back down Tenaya Canyon toward Half Dome's distinctive profile from an angle most Valley-based visitors never see, while Tenaya Lake's granite shoreline and still water give real reflection and composition options the Valley's taller, closer walls don't allow. Both sit at elevation along Highway 120, open only once the pass clears of snow for the season.
Because this is a private lesson for your group only, the pace and technical depth are set by what you already know — a beginner gets real instruction in exposure, composition, and working with natural light, while a more experienced photographer can work through techniques suited specifically to the high country's own light and terrain. Private, dedicated transportation and hotel pickup in the Yosemite area are included, so the 4 hours go directly toward shooting rather than logistics.
