Yosemite's crowding is really a geography problem. Roughly 95% of the park's more than 759,000 acres is designated wilderness, and Yosemite Valley — the relatively small area most visitors photograph — absorbs the overwhelming majority of the park's roughly 4 million annual visitors. Step even a modest distance beyond the Valley's main corridors and the crowds thin out quickly; the park's genuine quiet corners simply aren't where most people go.
Hetch Hetchy, in Yosemite's northwest corner, is a real, well-documented example of this: a glacially carved valley with its own granite walls and waterfalls, sometimes described as the Valley's quieter twin, that sees only a small fraction of the foot traffic — and, unlike the main Valley entrances, has never required a timed-entry reservation to visit. It's one of several genuinely lesser-known areas the park's wilderness holds, not a marketing invention.
