Sunset is when Yosemite Valley's granite does something it doesn't do at any other hour. As the sun drops low, the warm, low-angle light known as "golden hour" washes across the upper faces of the valley's cliffs, and in the final minutes before true sunset, exposed granite peaks like Half Dome can take on a deep, ruddy-red glow often called alpenglow, caused by the low sun's light scattering through more of the atmosphere than it does at midday. It's one of the most photographed transformations in the park, and it only lasts a matter of minutes.
This tour is built around catching that window, after a day of real Yosemite sightseeing, before settling in for a campfire finish. S'mores — toasted marshmallow and chocolate pressed between graham crackers — are themselves a genuinely old American camping tradition: the first known written recipe appeared in a 1927 Girl Scout handbook, Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts, under the name "Some More," though an earlier version may have circulated around 1920 in a cookbook from the Campfire Marshmallow Company.
Because the meeting point for this tour is confirmed directly with guests ahead of time rather than fixed to one spot, the exact sunset viewpoint can shift with the season. Sunset itself moves by hours across the year, and which granite walls catch the best light depends on where the sun sits relative to the valley's walls that particular evening — something a private, flexible pickup point can actually account for, rather than locking everyone into the same fixed overlook year-round.
