Few places have as unusual a conservation history as Yosemite. In 1864, in the middle of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Yosemite Grant Act, setting aside Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias "for public use, resort and recreation" — the first time in American history the federal government had protected land purely for its scenery, years before the word "national park" existed anywhere in the world (Yellowstone, usually credited as the first true national park, wasn't established until 1872). The wider boundary of today's Yosemite National Park came later still: naturalist John Muir, alarmed after seeing unregulated sheep grazing damaging the high meadows around the valley in 1889, spent the following year lobbying Congress and writing magazine articles that helped push through the park's full 1890 designation.
That history matters for a tour like this one, because Yosemite is a far bigger and wilder place than the postcard images of the valley floor suggest. The park covers roughly 759,000 acres, with close to 95 percent of it formally designated wilderness, yet the overwhelming majority of its millions of annual visitors never leave Yosemite Valley itself, a sliver of the total park. A 4x4 Hummer, built to handle unpaved and backcountry-grade roads that an ordinary tour van can't, is a genuinely different way to experience terrain most day visitors never see.
El Capitan, Half Dome, and the valley's other granite giants were all shaped by the same forces this kind of route lets you appreciate from a different vantage: ancient river systems that began cutting through the Sierra Nevada's granite roughly 5 to 10 million years ago, later widened and deepened by glaciers starting around 2.5 million years ago into the broad U-shaped valley seen today. Seeing that landscape from quieter, less-traveled roads rather than only the crowded valley floor gives a genuinely different sense of scale.
