Fly fishing Yosemite's high-country lakes is a genuinely different experience from working the Tuolumne or Merced rivers down in the lower elevations — these remote alpine lakes, many reached only on foot, hold species that owe their presence to a real and fairly unusual stocking history rather than natural river access. Golden trout were first introduced to the park in 1919, with the earliest planting made in Adair Lake at around 10,000 feet, while brook trout — a hardy, cold-water species well suited to high-elevation lakes — were stocked widely enough across the decades that they now outcompete rainbow trout in many of the same waters, eventually becoming the dominant species in most of these lakes.
That stocking program itself is now history rather than an ongoing practice: Yosemite, along with Sequoia and Kings Canyon, began phasing out trout stocking in 1969 following recommendations in the Leopold Report, and in 1991 the National Park Service and California's fish and wildlife agency formally agreed to end it entirely, closing out more than a century of fish stocking in these parks. The fish populations anglers find in the high country today are the self-sustaining descendants of those earlier plantings, not a maintained or restocked fishery.
This is deliberately pitched at more experienced anglers over a full, long day — the lakes themselves are harder to reach, the fishing conditions are less predictable than a well-known river stretch, and the format skips the beginner-focused, catch-and-release structure built into the shorter family tour on the Tuolumne and Merced. Anyone 16 or older still needs a valid California fishing license here exactly as they would on any other Yosemite water, a real, non-negotiable requirement rather than something specific to lower-elevation fishing alone.
Because these high lakes sit well off any paved road, a private guide's real value here is less about teaching casting technique and more about simply knowing which remote lake is actually fishable on a given day — conditions, access, and which species are biting can vary meaningfully from one basin to the next in a way that a river doesn't.
