The Cathedral Range sits in Yosemite's high country, the subalpine terrain that opens up along the Tioga Road corridor well above the Valley floor — a genuinely different Yosemite from the granite walls most photographs show. At elevations approaching 10,000 feet, the landscape shifts to open meadows, exposed granite domes, and noticeably thinner, cooler air, with Tuolumne Meadows — one of the Sierra Nevada's largest subalpine meadows — as the high country's best-known landmark.
A real, important honesty point: this terrain is only reachable by road for part of the year. The Tioga Road, the only route into this part of the park, typically closes for the season by November and doesn't reopen until late May or even June, depending on that winter's snowpack — so a tour into the high country can only run in the warmer months when the road is actually open, not year-round.
The tradeoff for that seasonal limit is a real one: Cathedral Peak and the domes around it, Tuolumne Meadows' open subalpine views, and noticeably thinner crowds than the Valley floor, since the drive up the Tioga Road is one most Yosemite visitors never make at all.
