The real Panorama Trail runs 8.5 miles one-way from Glacier Point down to Happy Isles in Yosemite Valley, dropping about 3,200 feet in elevation along the way — starting at Glacier Point's 7,200 feet and finishing at the Valley floor's roughly 4,000 feet. That net descent is the real draw of hiking it in this direction: rather than climbing out of the Valley, you start at one of the park's best overlooks and spend most of the day walking downhill through a sequence of genuinely different landscapes.
The trail's first real landmark is Illilouette Fall, a 370-foot drop reached after passing Panorama Point's own wide view back toward Half Dome — a stretch some hikers do as a shorter out-and-back on its own, but which here is simply the first leg of a longer day. From there the trail continues to Nevada Fall, a dramatic 594-foot plunge, where it merges with the famous Mist Trail for the final stretch past Vernal Fall's 317-foot drop and down to Happy Isles.
Because the hike starts at Glacier Point rather than the Valley floor, the views along the way are genuinely different from what a Valley-based hike shows — sweeping looks at Half Dome, Yosemite Falls, and the High Sierra from above, rather than looking up at them from below. It's a real, long day of hiking (nearly 10 hours on this tour), but almost all of it is downhill, which makes the distance more manageable than the elevation-loss number alone might suggest.
This route shares its final stretch along the Merced River with the Sentinel Dome and Taft Point hike's own departure point at Glacier Point, but the two hikes otherwise go in completely different directions — this one follows waterfalls down into the Valley, while the other stays up near Glacier Point's own clifftop viewpoints.
