The rainbow trout is the only trout species genuinely native to Yosemite's waters, originally found in the Merced and Tuolumne river systems below the high waterfalls that historically blocked fish from migrating any further upstream into the park's valleys. Brown trout, a non-native but long-established import, now share these same rivers and are a real, common catch on both the Tuolumne and Merced — which is why this family tour's catch-and-release, barbless-hook approach matters: any native rainbow trout caught on the Merced River from the Happy Isles area downstream must legally be released immediately, a real California regulation this tour's practices are built around rather than just a generic conservation gesture.
What makes this version of fly fishing genuinely different from the high-country trip is where it happens and who it's designed for — the lower-elevation stretches of the Tuolumne and Merced near Yosemite are easier, more open water to learn casting on than a remote alpine lake, and the barbless-hook, catch-and-release format is specifically built around beginners and kids rather than anglers chasing a trophy fish.
A real, practical detail worth knowing ahead of time: California requires anyone 16 or older to hold a valid state fishing license to fish anywhere in Yosemite, including on this tour, while anyone younger can fish without one. Non-resident visitors can buy a short-term license (commonly a one-, two-, or ten-day option) online through the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, or in person at shops in Yosemite Village or Tuolumne Meadows — something worth sorting out before you arrive rather than at the riverbank.
