Los Angeles sits roughly 280 to 310 miles from Yosemite depending on the route — commonly via Highway 99 north through Fresno and then Highway 41 — a genuine 5.5-to-6.5-hour drive each way that makes a same-day round trip impractical. This 2-day format splits that distance across two real days instead, with Day 1 reaching Mariposa Grove, Yosemite's own giant sequoia grove, and a genuine overnight stay in Oakhurst rather than pushing straight through to the Valley.
Oakhurst is a real gateway town on Highway 41, roughly 16 miles — about a 24-minute drive — south of Yosemite's South Entrance, which sits closest to the Mariposa Grove area itself. It's a genuine staging point for South Entrance visitors, with its own lodging, restaurants, and nearby Bass Lake, rather than requiring the group to push on into the park before stopping for the night.
Mariposa Grove itself reopened to the public in June 2018 after a three-year, roughly $40 million restoration that replaced an old road-and-tram system with boardwalks and a shuttle, protecting the roots of its roughly 500 mature giant sequoias — real, ancient trees that predate the park, the state, and in several cases the country itself.
