In winter nearly all of Yellowstone's interior roads close to regular vehicles, with oversnow travel starting around mid-December. The road from Gardiner to Cooke City stays open to cars, which is why a winter wolf tour is built around the Lamar Valley and Mammoth Hot Springs rather than the geyser basins.
The Lamar Valley is where wolves from Canada were released in 1995 and 1996 after roughly 70 years of absence. Winter is a favoured time for watching them: dark animals stand out against snow, and sound and tracks carry in the cold, so a guide can spot activity across the valley.
Mammoth Hot Springs is a different kind of winter sight. Its steplike terraces form as hot, carbonate-rich water deposits travertine, and steam hangs over the white stone in cold air. Warm clothing and patience matter more than anything else on this tour.
