Yellowstone is notable for a complete predator and prey system: eight kinds of ungulate, including bison, elk, moose and bighorn sheep, alongside seven large predators such as grizzly and black bears, coyotes and wolves. That is the real reason a spotting scope matters here. Much of the best viewing is of animals a long way off across open valleys.
Wolves were returned to the park in 1995 and 1996 after about 70 years of absence, with wolves captured in Canada released in the Lamar Valley. As of early 2024 roughly 124 wolves were estimated to live inside the park. Because wolves are most active around dawn and dusk, a custom schedule built by a professional guide makes more difference than any single stop.
The park lists nearly 300 bird species, and optics provided per person means birders in your group are not left squinting while others watch bears. Sightings are never guaranteed, so a custom itinerary mainly means your guide adapts to what the animals are doing on the day.
