A winter safari in Yellowstone depends on roads. Most interior roads are closed to regular vehicles from early winter, and snowmobiles and snowcoaches take over later in the season. A route from Gardiner along the year-round northern road keeps a private vehicle in play.
Winter concentrates animals: elk and bison come down to lower, snow-free ground, and the predators that follow them become easier to find against white backdrops. Bison in the park numbered roughly 4,800 as of 2023, so even a short drive often turns up herds.
With one dedicated guide and a six-to-eight-hour day, you can choose between long scanning stops and short walks, dress for the cold, and warm up between stops. As always, wildlife can't be guaranteed.
