Evening is when Yellowstone's large animals tend to move: elk step out to graze, bison drift across slopes, and bears and wolves become more active around dusk. A four-hour evening format fits that rhythm and leaves the long daytime hours free for something else.
Gardiner sits at the park's North Entrance, which keeps the drive into prime country short. The road from there to the Northeast Entrance is the park's only year-round route for cars, so it is a natural starting point for an evening outing.
