Wildlife photography here is mostly about light and distance. Animals are most active near dawn and dusk, when the light is soft, and many are far away across open valleys, so long lenses, patience and fieldcraft count for more than gear alone.
Yellowstone has 67 mammal species, including grizzly and black bears, wolves, bison and elk, and nearly 300 bird species. The Lamar Valley and Hayden Valley are well known for open sightlines. Bison are the most dependable subject, with the park's herd estimated at roughly 4,800 in 2023.
A four-to-five-hour session with a guide who has decades in the park is as much about learning behaviour, safe distance and positioning as pressing the shutter. Wolves, bears and other animals can't be promised on any given day.
