Departing Gardiner at 7:30 AM puts you in the Lamar Valley when wildlife is most active. Gardiner is also home to the park's North Entrance, and the road from there through Mammoth Hot Springs and Tower Junction to the Northeast Entrance is the only road open to cars all year.
This is the valley where wolves from Canada were released in January 1995, with more arriving in 1996, after about six decades of absence. Today the park is home to an estimated 124 wolves, and the valley's open sagebrush country is among the easiest places to watch them with a scope from a distance.
Bison are the most reliable sight, with the park's herd estimated at roughly 4,800 animals in 2023. A six-hour morning keeps things focused: long scanning stops, a gluten-free lunch option if needed, and professional optics to share.
