Old Faithful got its name from the 1870 Washburn expedition, and it has earned it: eruptions have lengthened from roughly an hour apart in the nineteenth century to an average of about 90 minutes today, with real variation either side. Your guide can check the predicted window so the stop at the Upper Geyser Basin is timed rather than left to chance, leaving time for the boardwalks past Morning Glory Pool.
Grand Prismatic Spring, in the Midway Geyser Basin, is the largest hot spring in the United States, about 370 feet across and roughly 160 feet deep, and usually ranked third largest in the world. The rainbow bands at its edge come from heat-tolerant microbial mats, while the sterile centre reads a deep blue. The park's drives at Firehole Lake and Firehole Canyon fill in the geothermal side of the day.
The other half of the loop is water and wildlife: the Lower Falls drop about 308 feet and the Upper Falls about 109 feet, and Hayden Valley is one of the park's best-known places to look for bison and, in season, bears. Because this is a full 7-9 hour day with lunch built in, family-friendly short walks sit alongside the drives rather than replacing them.
