Norris Geyser Basin is the hottest, oldest and most dynamic of Yellowstone's thermal areas. The highest temperature ever recorded in a Yellowstone thermal area, 459 degrees Fahrenheit, came from a scientific drill hole there. Steamboat Geyser, in the basin, is the tallest active geyser in the world, with major eruptions reaching 300 to 400 feet, though they are irregular and rare.
Fishing Bridge crosses the Yellowstone River where it leaves Yellowstone Lake. Anglers once fished here for cutthroat trout, but overfishing contributed to their decline and the bridge was closed to fishing in 1973. Today it is a place to watch trout from above.
The Upper Loop and Lower Loop together are about 142 miles on the figure-eight Grand Loop Road, which is why this tour runs 12 hours from West Yellowstone: Old Faithful and its neighbours, Hayden Valley and Norris all fit in one long day.
