The Lamar Valley earned the American Serengeti nickname because it holds wolves, bison and other large animals in plain view. In winter 1995, wolves captured in Canada were released here, and more followed in 1996, restoring a predator that had been absent for about 70 years.
From West Yellowstone it takes a good part of the morning to reach the valley, so this tour is a committed day for wildlife. Grizzlies are most often seen at dawn and dusk, bison are reliably there, and wolves are a bonus rather than a promise.
