About This Tour
A private, customizable half-day city tour of Yellowknife led by an experienced local guide — the city's history, its famous houseboats, and local flavour, shaped around your own group's interests.
Yellowknife is the capital of the Northwest Territories, and its character comes from the contrast between a compact modern downtown and the log-cabin streets of Old Town on the shore of Great Slave Lake, the deepest lake in North America.
The floating houseboats of Yellowknife Bay began in the early 1980s, when residents frustrated by rising property costs and municipal rules built homes from barrel barges and salvaged wood and moored them off Jolliffe Island. Today the community is lived in year-round.
Ragged Ass Road, a short Old Town lane renamed as a joke in 1970 after a lean prospecting season, is a favourite photo stop and a good example of the humour that shapes local place names.
