Windsor is the Canadian side of the Detroit River, and its riverfront is one of the few places where you can look across an international border at a major American skyline. A few hundred metres of water is all that separates the two cities, and the Windsor shore has been turned into a long, connected parkland.
Dieppe Gardens occupies land once used by Windsor-Detroit ferries; those services declined after the Ambassador Bridge opened in 1929 and the tunnel in 1930. The gardens honour veterans and are generally considered the best vantage point on the Detroit skyline.
Nearby, the Windsor Sculpture Park displays dozens of large-scale contemporary works along the waterfront between the Ambassador Bridge and the Art Gallery of Windsor. The bridge itself, completed in 1929, was the longest suspension span in the world when it opened and remains one of the busiest border crossings in North America.
