Mount Logan, at 5,959 metres, is the highest mountain in Canada and the second highest in North America, and it sits inside Kluane National Park and Reserve alongside 16 of Canada's 20 tallest peaks. The park also holds the largest non-polar icefields in the world, with ice more than 700 metres thick in places. Most of that is deep in the backcountry, so a day trip shows you the edges: the mountain front, glacial valleys and the Alaska Highway gateway.
The area was first set aside as a game reserve in 1942, became a national park in 1972, and in 1979 was included in a UNESCO World Heritage site that now spans Canada and Alaska. Haines Junction, where the tour stops for lunch, is the park's gateway community.
Dall sheep are the headline wildlife on Sheep Mountain, and your best chance to see them is early in the day, though sightings vary. Kathleen Lake, with its calm water and mountain backdrop, is the easy scenic stop if time allows.
