The Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre opened in July 2008 and is a joint project of the Squamish (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh) and Lil'wat (Líl̓wat7úl) Nations, growing from a 2001 protocol agreement between the two. Its 30,000-square-foot building blends a Coast Salish longhouse with a Lil'wat Istken pit house. Squamish Chief Gibby Jacob described its purpose as preserving and sharing the nations' culture rather than tourism alone, which is a good way to approach a visit.
Whistler's Olympic Plaza and Lost Lake belong to the resort's Olympic and outdoor story. The Olympic Plaza hosted medals ceremonies for the 2010 Games, and Lost Lake offers an easy lake and forest loop a short distance from the village. Rainbow Lodge, founded by Alex and Myrtle Philip in 1914 on Alta Lake, was an early tourism pioneer in this valley.
Seeing these places by vehicle with a local guide lets you cover more ground than a village walk, with the history placed in context.
