Heldenplatz is where, on March 15, 1938 — the day after German troops entered Austria — Adolf Hitler addressed a crowd estimated at over 200,000 people from the terrace of the Neue Hofburg, proclaiming Austria's absorption into the German Reich. The terrace itself is technically called an 'Altan' rather than a balcony in architectural terms, but it's remembered today simply as the spot where the Anschluss was publicly declared, one of the defining images of Austria's entry into the Second World War.
From there, the tour's path to the Judenplatz Holocaust Memorial draws a direct line from that public declaration to its human cost. Rachel Whiteread's Nameless Library, a concrete library turned inside out, commemorates the roughly 65,000 Austrian Jews murdered in the Holocaust — a number that, by some estimates, represented close to 10 percent of Vienna's entire pre-war Jewish community of around 170,000 people. The memorial's own unveiling in 2000 was delayed for years after excavations beneath the square uncovered the remains of a medieval synagogue.
Having a trained historian walk this specific route — from the public square where annexation was announced to the memorial square where its victims are now named only by their absence — gives the history a continuity that's easy to miss reading about these sites separately.
