About This Tour
A private hiking tour for your group only, real stops at Spitz, the Red Gate, and Thousand-Year Mountain. This is a private hiking tour for your group only. Real stops include Spitz, the Red Gate, Thousand-Year Mountain, and the Ruine Hinterhaus.
Spitz is built quite literally around its own vineyard: the Tausendeimerberg, or 'Thousand-Bucket Mountain,' rises straight out of the middle of town, named for the volume of wine its slopes alone were once said to be capable of producing in a single good year. Climbing it on foot — rather than just driving past — is the real point of this tour, with the hilltop view taking in Spitz's best-known landmarks at once: the town, the Danube, and the terraced hills around it.
The Red Gate, a 20-minute walk from the town center, is what remains of Spitz's medieval fortifications, originally one of seven gates built into the town walls. Its grim nickname dates to the Thirty Years' War, when Swedish troops stormed this particular gate at a heavy cost in lives on both sides; locals have called it the Red Gate, or the Swedish Gate, ever since. Today it's simply a scenic lookout over the vineyards and the river below.
Unlike most Wachau day trips, which move between sights by car, this one is built around real walking — trails connecting Spitz, the Red Gate, Tausendeimerberg, and the Ruine Hinterhaus castle ruin over roughly three hours. It's the same UNESCO-listed valley the region's wine tours cover, seen on foot instead of through a car window.
