Melk Abbey's story starts in 1089, when the Babenberg margrave Leopold II gave one of his own family castles, perched on a rocky outcrop above the Danube, to Benedictine monks from Lambach Abbey. A monastic school followed within a century, and by the 15th century Melk had become the center of a reform movement that reshaped monastic life across Austria and southern Germany — the monks you'll meet today are heirs to a nearly 1,000-year continuous community, not a museum display.
The abbey most visitors actually see, though, is much younger: today's Baroque complex was built between 1702 and 1736 to designs by Jakob Prandtauer, its church frescoed by Johann Michael Rottmayr and Paul Troger. By the late 18th century the abbey had also become a genuine center of Enlightenment-era intellectual life, with several of its own monks belonging to a Masonic lodge — an unusual footnote for a working Benedictine monastery.
Dürnstein's ruined hilltop castle carries a real piece of European history: England's King Richard the Lionheart was held prisoner there from December 1192 to March 1193, after Duke Leopold V of Austria caught up with him traveling home from the Third Crusade. Richard was freed only after a ransom of 150,000 marks in silver was paid — a story that later gave rise to the legend of his minstrel Blondel, said to have found him by singing outside castle walls until Richard sang back.
