Beneath St. Stephen's Cathedral, the catacombs hold the remains of generations of Habsburgs, Viennese cardinals, and archbishops, including Duke Rudolph IV — nicknamed "the Founder" — who laid the cornerstone for the cathedral's Gothic reconstruction back in 1359 and is himself now buried in the crypt he set in motion.
Above ground and a short distance away, Judenplatz marks the center of Vienna's medieval Jewish community, which began settling there around 1150 under the protection of the ruling Babenberg dukes. By 1400, the quarter held around 800 residents across 70 houses and a large stone synagogue — one of the most important in Europe at the time, drawing rabbis of real renown.
In 1420–21, Duke Albert V ordered the community expelled and killed, and the synagogue itself was demolished, its stones reused to build Vienna's old university. The site was left unmarked for more than 500 years until 1990s excavations uncovered the synagogue's foundations, now preserved underground as the Museum Judenplatz, which opened in 2000.
Walking from the cathedral's crypts into this square connects two very different kinds of underground history — one built to honor the dead with ceremony, the other recovered only recently from centuries of deliberate erasure.
