About This Tour
A private tour for your group only, real stops at St. Stephen's, Peterskirche, and Minoritenkirche. This is a private tour for your group only. Real stops include St. Stephen's Cathedral, Peterskirche, and Minoritenkirche.
St. Stephen's Cathedral stands on the site of two earlier churches, the first consecrated in 1147. A major fire in 1258 destroyed much of that building, and its Romanesque replacement was consecrated in 1263. The Gothic cathedral familiar today began in 1304, when King Albert I ordered a new three-nave choir; the south tower, whose cornerstone Rudolf IV laid in 1359, wasn't finished until 1433, and the nave vaulting continued until 1474 — construction that spanned nearly two centuries of Habsburg rule.
A short walk away, Peterskirche occupies what may be Vienna's oldest Christian worship site, with some accounts crediting Charlemagne with founding a church there in the late 8th century. The baroque building seen today was designed from 1702 by Gabriel Montani and completed around 1732 under Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt, and it's regarded as the most lavishly decorated baroque interior in the city.
Minoritenkirche tells a different story again: built in French Gothic style from the 13th century, with its foundation stone laid by King Ottokar II of Bohemia in 1276, it only became Vienna's Italian national church in 1784, when Emperor Joseph II gave it to the city's Italian community as a dedicated place of worship — a role it still holds today.
