City Hall, the neo-Gothic Rathaus with its cathedral-like central tower, was completed in 1883 to designs by architect Friedrich Schmidt and remains one of the Ringstrasse's defining buildings — deliberately set back from the road to give its tower room to dominate the skyline around it.
The Ringstrasse itself exists because of a single 1857 decree from Emperor Franz Joseph I, who ordered Vienna's old defensive walls and moats torn down and replaced with a grand boulevard lined with monumental civic buildings, each one built in a historical style chosen to suit its purpose — neo-Gothic for City Hall, for instance. Covering that ground by Segway, gliding along the Ring at a relaxed pace, takes in far more of this 19th-century architectural statement than most visitors manage on foot in the same amount of time.
Because the tour is private, the route through City Hall, the Ringstrasse, and Vienna's Old Town can flex around what your own group wants to linger over — whether that's more time at a particular landmark or simply a slower overall pace.
