Schönbrunn's gardens were laid out as part of Maria Theresa's 18th-century transformation of the grounds, their long Baroque avenues designed to draw the eye straight up the hill to a single focal point: the Gloriette.
Built in 1775, the Gloriette commemorates Austria's 1757 victory over Prussia at the Battle of Kolín, and its glazed central section was purpose-built as a banqueting hall for imperial celebrations — a very different role from the simple viewpoint most visitors assume it to be. From its terrace, the full symmetry of the palace and parkland below becomes clear in a way the ground-level paths never quite show.
Tucked into the same grounds is Tiergarten Schönbrunn, founded in 1752 at the suggestion of Maria Theresa's husband, Franz I Stephan — at close to 275 years old, it is recognized as the oldest continuously operating zoo in the world, its animal enclosures originally arranged around a central pavilion like slices of a cake. Nearby, the 1882 Palm House, 111 metres long and built from some 40,000 panes of glass, was the largest greenhouse in Europe when it opened.
Together with the maze and the long formal parterres, the gardens are part of what earned the whole Schönbrunn estate UNESCO World Heritage status — and seeing them without the pace and crowds of a palace-interior visit lets their real scale register properly.
