About This Tour
A private tour for your group only, real Ringstrasse architectural landmarks and a genuine Café Schwarzenberg stop. This is a private tour for your group only. Real content covers the genuine Ringstrasse's grand architectural landmarks, with a stop at the real Café Schwarzenberg.
The Ringstrasse exists because of a single decree. On 20 December 1857, Emperor Franz Joseph I signed an order — famously opening with the words "Es ist Mein Wille" ("It is my will") — commanding the demolition of Vienna's medieval city walls and moats, which by then were simply blocking traffic between the old center and the newly annexed suburbs. In their place rose a boulevard specified down to the metre: 57 metres wide and five kilometres long, ringing the historic core.
Construction of the grand public buildings along it ran through the 1860s to the 1890s, in an eclectic historicist style sometimes called Ringstraßenstil, borrowing freely from Classical, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture — a deliberate attempt to give the young boulevard instant historical gravitas.
Café Schwarzenberg, opened in 1861 while construction was still underway around it, is the oldest coffeehouse on the entire Ringstrasse and quickly became a meeting point for the era's entrepreneurs and financiers. Architect Josef Hoffmann was a regular there, and several of his designs are said to have been sketched out at its tables — a small, lived-in counterpoint to the boulevard's monumental official architecture.
