About This Tour

A private tour for your group only, in a real vintage oldtimer car, with genuine Prosecco included. This is a private tour for your group only, in a genuine vintage oldtimer car. Real, genuine Prosecco is included as you tour Vienna's landmarks.

The grand boulevard your oldtimer car glides along, the Ringstrasse, exists because of a single decree. In 1857, Emperor Franz Joseph I ordered the demolition of Vienna's old city walls and moats, replacing them with a wide ceremonial ring road lined with monumental public buildings — a project explicitly intended as a showcase for the grandeur of the Habsburg Empire. Franz Joseph laid out not just the boulevard's dimensions but the exact positions and functions of the buildings along it, which is why the Ringstrasse still reads today as one coherent imperial statement rather than a patchwork of unrelated landmarks.

One of those buildings, the neo-Gothic Rathaus, was completed in 1883 to designs by Friedrich Schmidt — its cathedral-like central tower set deliberately back from the road, in the Flemish Gothic style Schmidt favored for civic buildings of this scale. Touring past it, and the Ringstrasse's other 19th-century landmarks, by vintage car rather than on foot gives the imperial theme a fittingly old-fashioned frame.

The genuine Austrian sparkling wine poured along the way is a fitting companion to all of it — a small, honest indulgence that rounds out a route built around the single most deliberate piece of imperial city planning Vienna ever undertook.
