Bled Castle, perched on its cliff above the lake, is one of the oldest fortifications in Slovenia — it was first mentioned in writing in 1011, when Emperor Henry II gifted it, along with land the size of thirty farms, to the Bishop of Brixen. For roughly the next 800 years the area stayed under the rule of the prince-bishops of Brixen, a single administrative thread running through nearly a millennium of Bled's history.
The little island church below the castle has its own layered past. Before any church stood there, the site is believed to have held a temple to Živa, a Slavic goddess of love and fertility. The first stone church was consecrated in 1142; it was rebuilt in Gothic style in the 15th century, then largely destroyed by an earthquake in 1509 and rebuilt again, this time in the Baroque style seen today. Local tradition holds that ringing the church's wishing bell, after climbing the island's long flight of steps, grants a wish — a nice custom to witness even if you don't climb it yourself.
In Ljubljana, the real centerpiece is the Triple Bridge (Tromostovje) over the Ljubljanica River — a crossing point that dates back to the 13th century, though its current form is more recent. The central stone bridge was built in 1842; in the early 1930s, architect Jože Plečnik redesigned the crossing, adding the two pedestrian bridges that flank it today and giving the whole ensemble its distinctive stone balustrades and lamps. The Triple Bridge was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2021 as part of Plečnik's wider architectural legacy across the city.
