The Leopold Museum is a young institution built on one couple's lifetime of collecting. Rudolf Leopold, an ophthalmologist, and his wife Elisabeth spent roughly five decades buying up Austrian art that, in the postwar decades, few other collectors wanted — Schiele's work in particular had fallen out of fashion and was comparatively affordable. Their holdings, more than 5,000 pieces in total, were consolidated into a private foundation in 1994 with support from the Republic of Austria and the National Bank, and the museum built to house them opened in Vienna's MuseumsQuartier on the evening of 21 September 2001.
That patient, decades-long buying is why the Leopold now holds the largest Egon Schiele collection anywhere in the world — more than 220 works in total, spanning his short, intense career before his death in 1918. Gustav Klimt is represented too, including his unsettling late work "Death and Life," alongside other figures of the Vienna 1900 generation such as Oskar Kokoschka and Richard Gerstl.
Your art historian guide works through this collection with the depth a museum staff lecture rarely has time for — explaining not just what Schiele and Klimt painted, but the specific Vienna they painted in: a city of psychoanalysis, secessionist architecture, and a deliberate break from the ornate historicism of the Ringstrasse generation just before it.
Because this is a private tour, the pace is set by your own group's questions rather than a fixed museum-lecture schedule — genuinely useful in a museum built around one unusually personal, sometimes difficult body of work.
