Gustav Klimt co-founded the Vienna Secession in 1897 alongside a group of artists rebelling against the city's conservative Künstlerhaus establishment. Their new exhibition building, completed the following year by architect Joseph Maria Olbrich and funded by industrialist Karl Wittgenstein, still carries the movement's motto above its entrance: "To every age its art, to art its freedom."
It was there, in 1902, that Klimt created the Beethoven Frieze for the Secession's fourteenth exhibition — a tribute to the composer spanning roughly 34 metres across three walls. The Republic of Austria only acquired it for the nation in 1973, and it remains installed in the purpose-built gallery space designed for it inside the Secession building.
The Belvedere holds Klimt's two best-known paintings, The Kiss and Judith, both from the same gilded "Golden Period." A different, later Klimt emerges at the Leopold Museum, where Death and Life — one of his great late allegories on the human life cycle — shows the artist working in a bolder, less ornamental register than the gold-ground works most visitors expect.
Seeing all three sites in one day traces Klimt's full arc: from a founding rebel against academic painting, through his most celebrated gilded period, to the darker, more existential work of his final years before his death in 1918.
