The Hofburg has been the seat of power in Vienna since the late 13th century, serving as the Habsburgs' winter residence for over 600 years until the monarchy's end in 1918. What stands today is less a single building than an accumulated complex — 18 wings and 19 courtyards spread across 24 hectares, making it the largest secular building complex anywhere in Europe.

Within it, the Sisi Museum opened in 2004 specifically to look past the myth of Empress Elisabeth and toward the woman herself. Its collection of more than 300 personal objects — clothing, jewelry, letters, portraits — traces her obsession with physical fitness and beauty, her restless travel, and a public image her own court never fully controlled.

Elisabeth was a genuinely unconventional figure for her era: famed for ankle-length hair that reportedly took two hours daily to comb, an avid horsewoman, and chronically uneasy with the formality of Viennese court life. She was assassinated in Geneva on 10 September 1898, stabbed with a sharpened file by the Italian anarchist Luigi Lucheni as she walked to board a lake steamer — an attack he later said he would have carried out against any sovereign who crossed his path that day.
