About This Tour

A private tour for your group only, real stops at Salzburg, Hallstatt, and Melk Abbey. This is a private tour for your group only. Real stops include genuine Salzburg, the lakeside village of Hallstatt, and Melk Abbey.

Hallstatt sits on what's often called the world's oldest salt mine, with evidence of salt extraction here going back roughly 7,000 years to the Neolithic era. The prehistoric graves uncovered in the valley above the village were so significant to archaeology that an entire prehistoric era — the Hallstatt period, roughly 800 to 450 BC — was named after the site. From the 16th century until 1960, Hallstatt was the single most important salt-mining location in the whole Salzkammergut region.

Melk Abbey, the day's second stop, was founded in 1089 when the Babenberg margrave Leopold II handed one of his own castles to Benedictine monks. Its library became renowned for its manuscript collection almost from the start, and a monastic school founded here in the 12th century is the direct forerunner of the Stiftsgymnasium Melk still operating today — a nearly 900-year-old thread connecting the abbey's present to its founding.

Salzburg, the third stop, adds Mozart's own birth city to the day — he was born at Getreidegasse 9 in 1756, in a house the family called home until 1773, now preserved as a museum. Covering all three in one day is genuinely ambitious; the tour is built for travelers who want the region's biggest names in a single trip rather than a slower, single-destination pace.
