Hallstatt's own history runs far deeper than its famous lakeside silhouette suggests: salt mining here dates back roughly 7,000 years, and the prehistoric burial grounds found in the valley above the village gave their name to the 'Hallstatt period' of European archaeology. From the 1500s until 1960 it was the most important salt-producing site in the entire Salzkammergut, a region that still counts 76 lakes within its borders today.
Lake Attersee, one of the additional stops this tour reaches, is Austria's largest lake by surface area at just over 46 square kilometers, with a shoreline running more than 50 kilometers and depths reaching close to 170 meters in places — numbers that make Hallstatt's own lake look modest by comparison, even if it's the better known of the two.
Mondsee carries its own real history: the first prehistoric pile-dwelling site in the region was discovered in its lakebed in 1872, giving its name to the 'Mondsee culture,' and these Alpine pile-dwelling sites were added to UNESCO's World Heritage list in 2011. Its lakeside Baroque basilica, besides its archaeological pedigree, also doubled as the wedding-scene set in 'The Sound of Music.'
St. Gilgen, the day's final lake town, has its own quieter claim to fame: it's the birthplace of Anna Maria Pertl, Mozart's mother, born there in 1720 — Wolfgang himself never actually visited, but his sister Nannerl later settled in the town after marrying. It's the kind of real, overlooked detail this multi-lake route turns up that a single-lake Hallstatt day trip wouldn't reach.
