About This Tour

A private tour for your group only, real coffee, chocolate, strudel, and Vienna market stops. This is a private tour for your group only. Real stops include genuine coffee and chocolate tastings, strudel, Vienna markets, and local wine.

Vienna's coffeehouse culture has carried UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status since October 2011, recognized for a tradition that popular legend traces to the late 17th century, in the years following the Ottoman sieges of the city — when coffee itself was still an unfamiliar, almost exotic import finding its way into Viennese daily life.

The Naschmarkt has moved and been renamed more than once. Its predecessor was a fruit and vegetable market at Freyung, relocated in 1780 after ongoing disputes with the neighboring Scottish monastery, the Schottenkloster. The site took its official name, Kärntnertormarkt, only in 1905, though locals had already nicknamed it "Aschenmarkt" ("Ash Market") before it settled into its familiar "Naschmarkt" ("Nibble Market") by around 1820 — a name that still fits its stalls of coffee, chocolate, and pastry today.

Walking the market and its surrounding cafés together makes the connection obvious: this is a city that built an entire, UNESCO-recognized social ritual around something it didn't even have access to a few centuries ago, and still treats every stop for coffee, strudel, or wine as something worth lingering over.
