Vienna's compact, walkable inner city is itself the product of a specific, dated decision: on 20 December 1857, Emperor Franz Joseph signed the decree ordering the demolition of Vienna's old fortress walls and moats — defenses that dated back to the 13th century and had been reinforced after the Ottoman sieges of 1529 and 1683 — to make way for the Ringstrasse, the grand boulevard that now rings the historic centre. Between the 1860s and 1890s, the city lined that new boulevard with the ornate public buildings — the opera house, parliament, city hall, the university — that still define how Vienna looks and feels today.
Before any of that, the same ground had already been a city for close to two thousand years: the Romans built a military camp called Vindobona here, with an estimated population of 15,000 to 20,000 people, guarding the Danube frontier of the empire. Excavated Roman officers' quarters are still visible underground at Hoher Markt, a short walk from where the medieval and imperial city later grew up around Stephansdom.
Because this tour is designed specifically for a first visit, your guide builds the walk around giving you a working mental map — which district is which, how the Ringstrasse relates to the older inner city inside it, and which of the big names (the cathedral, the Hofburg, the opera) are worth coming back to in more depth later in your trip — rather than trying to go deep on any single site in the time available.
It's a genuinely different kind of tour from this project's themed Vienna walks: less about one collection or one legend, more about giving you your bearings so the rest of your stay makes sense.
