The centrepiece of this tour is the Imperial Treasury, the Kaiserliche Schatzkammer, entered through the Schweizerhof — the oldest surviving part of the Hofburg, rebuilt in Renaissance style under Emperor Ferdinand I in the 16th century. Inside, the collection is split between secular and ecclesiastical treasures spanning more than a thousand years of European history, assembled and added to by successive generations of the Habsburg dynasty.
Its single most important object is the Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Empire: eight hinged gold plates, believed to have been made in western Germany for the coronation of Otto I in 962, with later additions possibly dating to the reign of Conrad II. The Treasury also holds the Imperial Sword and the Holy Lance, an object with its own centuries-old (and historically unverifiable) legend attached to it. A separate Austrian Crown was made in 1602 for Emperor Rudolf II and became the official Imperial Crown of Austria when the Austrian Empire was proclaimed in 1804, displayed today alongside its matching sceptre and globus cruciger.
Your named, individual guide — rather than a rotating museum docent — threads these objects into the broader Habsburg story: a dynasty that ruled continuously, through marriage as much as conquest, for the better part of six centuries, and whose court ceremony, religious devotion, and imperial self-image are all written directly into the regalia on display.
Because the group is private, there's real room to follow whichever thread of that history interests your own group most, rather than working through a fixed script at a fixed pace.
