About This Tour

A private tour for your group only, real Beethoven and Mozart homes, the Vienna State Opera, and the Musikverein. This is a private tour for your group only. Real stops include the genuine Beethoven and Mozart homes, the Vienna State Opera House, and the Musikverein.

Vienna's claim to the title "City of Music" rests on what's known as the First Viennese School — a term coined by musicologist Raphael Georg Kiesewetter in 1834 to group Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and later Ludwig van Beethoven. Franz Schubert is sometimes added as a fourth, and notably the only one of the group actually born in the city.

The Vienna State Opera opened on 25 May 1869 with a performance of Mozart's Don Giovanni before Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth. Neither of its architects, August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll, lived to see that opening night — van der Nüll took his own life and Sicardsburg died of a stroke soon after, both reportedly devastated by early public criticism of the building. Badly damaged by bombing in March 1945, the opera house reopened in November 1955 with a deliberately symbolic choice of work: Beethoven's Fidelio.

The Musikverein tells a gentler story. The land was granted by Franz Joseph I in 1863 during construction of the Ringstrasse, and Danish architect Theophil Hansen — who had studied the acoustics of ancient Greek amphitheaters — designed its Golden Hall specifically to achieve the sound quality still considered among the finest of any concert hall in the world. It opened on 6 January 1870 and has been the Vienna Philharmonic's home ever since.
