About This Tour
A private tour for your group only, genuinely seasonal, real Rathausplatz, Karlsplatz, and Am Hof markets. This is a private tour for your group only, genuinely seasonal (Christmas season only). Real stops include the Rathausplatz, Karlsplatz, and Am Hof Christmas markets.
The Christkindlmarkt on Rathausplatz, right in front of Vienna's neo-Gothic City Hall, is the largest of the city's Christmas markets and one of the most visited in Europe — drawing around 3 million visitors each winter, including roughly half a million from outside Austria. The Rathaus itself, completed in 1883 to designs by architect Friedrich Schmidt, makes for a genuinely striking backdrop once its spires are lit for the season.
The tradition's exact origins are a little murkier than the market's current scale might suggest. Claims that Vienna held Christmas markets as early as 1296 are often repeated, but surviving city financial records from that period don't actually show the revenue or costs such a market would have generated — so that date isn't well supported. What is documented is a market held at Freyung square from 1764 onward, generally regarded as the real starting point of Vienna's Christmas market tradition.
Am Hof and Karlsplatz, the walk's other stops, each bring their own character to the season — Am Hof set in one of Vienna's oldest and most historic squares, Karlsplatz framed by its own landmark architecture — giving the private route a genuine variety of settings rather than one long market alone.
