Bratislava Castle's hilltop has been inhabited for roughly 4,500 years, since the Eneolithic period, long before it became the fortified seat of a Great Moravian prince in the 9th century. By the 11th century it had been rebuilt in stone, and over the following centuries it grew into the residence it is today — a history that runs in parallel with, but entirely separate from, the older Devín Castle ruins a short drive downstream.
During the long stretch when Bratislava served as the coronation seat of the Kingdom of Hungary, eleven kings and eight queens were crowned here. Maria Theresa later used the castle as an imperial residence in the 18th century, one more layer in a building that's been rebuilt and repurposed more or less constantly for 900 years.
Bratislava's Old Town below the castle — a tight grid of cobbled lanes, pastel facades, and hidden courtyards — carries the marks of all three roles the city has played: royal capital, Habsburg trading outpost, and now Slovakia's own capital.
