About This Tour
A private tour for your group only, real stops at Devín Castle, the Blue Church, and Bratislava's Old Town. This is a private tour for your group only. Real stops include Devín Castle ruins, the Blue Church, the UFO Tower, and Bratislava's Old Town.
Devín Castle's ruins sit on a 212-meter cliff directly above where the Morava River flows into the Danube — a position that let whoever held it control both the river trade route and a branch of the old Amber Road. A fort first stood here under Prince Rastislav of Great Moravia in the 9th century, and Devín itself is first named in written sources in 864, when the Frankish king Louis the German laid siege to Rastislav there, making it one of the oldest documented sites in this part of Central Europe.
What's visible today is largely later work: the Upper Castle dates to the 13th century, with palace buildings added between the 15th and 17th centuries. Napoleon's troops blew up much of the complex in 1809 during their occupation of the region, leaving the dramatic ruin that stands now; it became a protected National Heritage Site in 1961.
Back in Bratislava's Old Town, the Church of St. Elizabeth — known simply as the Blue Church — is a very different kind of landmark: an Art Nouveau building completed in the early 1910s by Budapest architect Ödön Lechner, covered in pale blue Zsolnay ceramic tiles inside and out. It was commissioned to mark the 700th anniversary of St. Elizabeth of Hungary's birth, and remains one of the most photographed buildings in the city.
