Vienna has built out one of the more extensive urban cycling networks in Central Europe — more than 1,600 kilometers of bike paths across the city, much of it following flat riverside corridors that make for genuinely comfortable riding rather than a workout.
The Ringstrasse itself is one of the best-known stretches: a dedicated, protected two-way cycle track runs along most of the roughly 5-kilometer boulevard, tracing a loop past more 19th-century imperial-era landmarks — City Hall, the Burgtheater, the university, and more — than almost any other ride in the city offers in a single circuit. A full loop with stops typically takes somewhere between 45 minutes and an hour.
Beyond the Ring, routes along the Donaukanal and the Donauinsel (Danube Island) offer a different, car-free character — flat, continuous paths running for kilometers along the water, well away from traffic.
